Duke of Edinburgh's International Award

Learning through community, action and service

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is an enriching program for young people aged 14–25. Participants take part in activities across four areas: physical activity, new skills, volunteering, and an adventurous journey. There are three levels to achieve – Bronze, Silver, and the highly regarded Gold Award.

Each participant designs their own program based on their interests and passions, making it a unique and voluntary challenge. The Award empowers young people to explore their potential, build resilience, and make a positive impact on their community. It is recognised worldwide by employers and universities as a symbol of commitment, growth, and achievement.

Jerrabomberra High School is proud to offer this opportunity to our students. If you believe your child may be interested, visit the Duke of Edinburgh website or contact the school for more information.

Music - Individual tuition

Individual tuition opportunities

Students can access music tuition through our partnership with Canberra Music Tuition (CMT). Current lessons include piano, drums and guitar, with additional instruments – including voice – available on request.

Lessons are held during school hours, with costs arranged directly between parents/carers and CMT. If you are interested in enrolling your child, visit the  Canberra Music Tution website or contact the school office for more information.

Student Leadership

At Jerrabomberra High School, we recognise that every student has the capacity to lead. Student leadership helps young people find their voices, participate in decision-making, and understand their rights and responsibilities as active citizens. It enables students to have a real impact on their learning and school environment, while preparing them to participate meaningfully in the wider community.

As a new school, we are still establishing our student leadership model. Diagram 1 (below) outlines our overarching framework, which will be fully implemented by 2027. Our intent is to give all students a voice in areas of passion or interest — whether environmental, cultural, sporting, academic, or other areas identified by students themselves.

Students will be able to nominate and be elected by their peers to serve as visible leaders, or choose to lead through one of our school councils. Leadership opportunities will exist in classrooms, the playground, academic and co-curricular programs, and through contributions to cultural and community projects.

Student Leadership Structure

  • The school is led by two Year 12 School Captains and two Year 10 Junior Captains.
  • Each of our school houses elects one Year 12 Sports Captain, giving us a total of three Sports Captains.
  • We also appoint five Year 12 Prefects, who support the captains and take on broader leadership responsibilities.
  • In addition, there are five student councils. Each council includes one Stage 4 Leader (Years 7–8) and one Stage 5 Leader (Years 9–10), ensuring that student voice is represented across year levels.

This model ensures students have opportunities to lead through both formal roles and council representation, helping them develop the skills, confidence and responsibility to make a positive contribution to their school and community.
